Edible CBD products have grown into a multi-million Industry here in the UK and across many countries. Starting out as a fringe treatment, it has grown exponentially over the last 10 years. It is available on the high street, in supermarkets and even prescribed by doctors and chemists. Due to legislation lagging behind, how much you should take is not readily available -so here is a quick guide to give you a helping hand.
If you have bought CBD Oil you need to work out the dose per drop. To do this, divide the dose by the amount of drops in the bottle. 10ml bottles = 200 drops & 30ml bottles =600 drops. The amount can be written 2 ways as a percentage or in milligrams. So 5% is 500mg and 20% is 2000mg. This is the total of CBD in the bottle.
The equasion would then be – (5% (500mg) ÷ 200 (drops) = 2.5mg per drop.
For the record the Food Standards Agency have their daily dose set at 10mg. This 10 mg/day is a cautious, population‑wide safety limit based on long‑term liver and thyroid concerns, not a “therapeutic dose” target. A scientific review suggested an “acceptable daily intake” of about 0.43 mg/kg/day for the general population (≈30 mg/day for a 70 kg adult), and up to 100–160 mg/day as an upper limit for healthy adults using supplements, excluding sensitive groups.
Practical starter dosing for wellness
We recommend if you are new to CBD starting with low daily doses and building up while monitoring effects. Typical patterns:
Beginners: 10–20 mg per day total, split once or twice daily.
Some UK guides use 20–25 mg/day as a starting point, then adjust by 5 mg once a week until you feel benefit or side effects.
One example approach: start at 10–15 mg/day for a week, then increase by 5 mg increments each week, not exceeding your chosen safety cap.
Many people find that 20–40 mg/day is sufficient for stress, sleep support, or general wellbeing, but responses vary widely.
Matching dose to purpose (non‑medical use)
Typical “wellness” ranges from UK CBD education sites look roughly like:
General wellbeing: 10–20 mg/day.
Mild stress / relaxation: 15–30 mg/day.
Sleep support: 25–50 mg taken 30–90 minutes before bed.
Muscle recovery / post‑exercise: 20–40 mg after activity.
Ongoing discomfort: 30–60 mg/day, adjusted up or down based on response, staying within your safety framework.
These are not medical prescriptions; they are consumer‑level starting brackets, and you should adjust slowly, tracking effects and any side effects.
Understanding stronger “clinical” doses
In clinical trials for conditions like drug‑resistant epilepsy, CBD is used at much higher, prescription‑only doses, typically 10–25 mg/kg/day (for a 70 kg person, 700–1750 mg/day).
A systematic review found effective doses across many conditions ranging from under 1 mg/kg/day up to 50 mg/kg/day, but higher doses tended to give better outcomes while increasing side‑effect risk.
These levels require medical supervision, liver monitoring, and careful management of drug interactions; they are not appropriate DIY dosing targets for OTC CBD products.
