Why It Works: The Science
Your body has its own endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that regulates pain, inflammation, mood and hormone secretion. What most people don’t realise is that CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the female reproductive system in the uterus, ovaries, vagina and vulva. Sitting directly on the nerve cells, immune cells and smooth muscle tissue that govern sensation and comfort.
In other words, your intimate tissue is specifically designed to respond to cannabinoids. When you apply CBD topically here, it’s absorbed efficiently through mucous membranes (typically within 15–30 minutes), and gets to work in three key ways:
- Increases blood flow – CBD is a vasodilator, widening blood vessels and increasing circulation to erectile tissue. More blood flow = more engorgement = heightened sensitivity and arousal. Dr Kathleen Jordan MD (Chief Medical Officer, Midi Health) reports many patients notice “an increase in sexual pleasure by rubbing topical CBD on their vulva and clitoral areas before sex.”
- Reduces pain and inflammation. CBD targets the same enzyme as ibuprofen, interrupting the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. A 2025 randomised double-blind controlled trial found topical CBD significantly reduced dyspareunia (painful intercourse) and vulvar pain compared to placebo.
- Calms anxiety — CBD interacts with serotonin receptors and reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), helping create the mental conditions for arousal to happen naturally. Research from Yale School of Medicine found women may respond more favourably to CBD than men, possibly due to higher CB1 receptor density in the female central nervous system.
Particularly Powerful for Menopausal Women
The statistics around menopause and sexual wellbeing are stark and rarely spoken about openly:
- Up to 70% of postmenopausal women experience Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
- Up to 93% of those report vaginal dryness
- A major study of 4,418 postmenopausal women found reduced libido, painful intercourse, reduced arousal and difficulty orgasming were all commonly reported
- Fewer than a quarter of postmenopausal UK women are sexually active; only 3% describe themselves as happy with their sex life
- A 2020 survey found 27% of women were using or considering CBD to manage menopause symptoms
When oestrogen falls during menopause, vaginal nerve density paradoxically increases, making tissue more pain-sensitive while secretions decrease and vaginal walls thin. CBD, with its anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory and muscle-relaxant properties, addresses exactly these changes. A 2025 clinical trial on CBD-based vaginal products specifically for menopausal symptoms is now adding to the evidence base.

We bought this product on to the market back in 2019, despite a low key start it made small but powerful waves amongst the Bristol wellness community. Sales were small but steady for a few years but in 2023 something happened….
